Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, many nations formerly run under communist rule now have transitioned into democracies. A few nations, however, claim to maintain their strong foothold on preserving a dying breed of political system. China has received the most attention, due to it's emergence as a economic powerhouse. This trend has allowed China to gain respect of many countries across the globe, including the United States. Regardless of political ideology, most people see China's shift as a positive for the international community.
Poverty has risen to extreme levels because of the economic inequality that has started to worsen. A Chinese elite population has gained a great share of wealth, while the rest of the hundreds of millions of Chinese live in horrid conditions. A tidal wave of greed and selfishness has spread across the major cities, presenting a similar situation to what exists in the United States. In the US, however, there is no law or principle that has to be upheld to eliminate poverty completely, or even help minimize it. A democracy can function in whatever manner the people demand. In contrast, the core principles behind communism are to help the working and lower classes of society. It is to create unity among individuals so that no man, woman, or child should have to live in unbearable conditions. Equality is the strength behind communism, something that doesn't exist in Chinese society today.
Whether China maintains it's somewhat fascist rule of law or continues boosting its international trade, there is no such thing as communism in the great superpower of the East.
(I came up with this based off of previous knowledge, but here is a link that explains some aspects of the current situation more in-depth)
