I spend a good portion of my time finding new bands and types of music, so I figured I'd do just that for this assignment. What I came up with was a genre called C-Rock or Chinese Rock. It's first wave started in the mid-80's and lasted through the 90's. It's now making a come back. There is an annual festival held in Beijing called the Midi Modern Music Festival which gets crowds of over 80,000 people, has 100 or more bands, and features many C-Rock bands. It is the largets rock festival in China.
Essentially C-Rock is western rock and roll infused with Chinese influences (although Wikipedia begs to differ). It never made it across the pacific to our shores, but had a strong base in the youth subculture in it's time. It shares more similarities to American Alternative music then Rock and Roll in my opinion though which makes sense because they existed at the same time. Here's the link to the Wikipedia article For a list of C-Rock bands, more information, and some songs.
