Everyone is completely aware of Chinas way of thinking that boys are better than girls, so thus the girls are either aborted, killed at birth, or hidden away from the world. Fifty or so years ago this was not a problem, but as the years go on and the men are getting earlier, it's become increasingly difficult for them to find a wife, due to the fact that there are virtually no women growing and living in China in this age group. Not only does this cause dishonor to the men's families because they can't find wives, it's also putting the small number of women that are there at an increasing risk of rape, abduction and fear of living.
According to U.N officer Khalid Malik, he stated that, "In eight to 10 years, we will have something like 40 to 60 million missing women," he said, adding that it will have "enormous implications" for China's prostitution industry and human trafficking. "(NBC.com) This means that women in future times are going to have to be careful doing most anything outside alone, because anyone can come up at any given time abduct them, and sell them to men who are overly desperate for wives. There are peoples who now have the job to find these women and return them to their rightful homes, and from 2001-2003, nearly 42,000 women have been rescued from their "husbands."
There is some hope though, because projects have been set up that are just for letting families know that having girls as children is not worse or better than having a little boy. It's called the "Girl Care Project," and it focuses on educating families on respect for women. They do this because it's estimated that 40 million Chinese men will not be able to find wives, and they'll go to any extreme to get one. That's no good at all,
so Girl Care Project goes to villages in the poorest parts of China and teaches people about this. We haven't seen the worst of the gender imbalance, and probably the worst will come in about 15 years.
